Gaming Rigs

Postby Jase on February 20th, 2008, 8:08 pm

Hey team,

Just thought I'd start a new thread talking about my recent PC upgrade. I upgraded my video card from a Leadtek 7600GT to a HIS HD 3870 - very cool and quiet, and a definite improvement with some of the more graphical intensive games :D . Link here if people are interested, it actually looks pretty cool for a video card:

http://www.hisdigital.com/html/product_ov.php?id=364

I also upgraded my CPU cooler from stock Intel to a Noctua NH-U12P - a fairly new model with the improved Noctua fan. Very quiet, and dropped my stock CPU temps 10-15 degrees. Now for some overclocking fun :twisted:

You arse clowns, I made that post two years ago! I figured no-one was interested in talking about their PC hardware, because everyone ignored it.

Since then, my good little E6300 has been sitting rock solid at 2.8 GHZ (up from 1.8). Temps are well under control (about 50 degrees under stress load, depending on ambient temp). I've seen some people push these chips beyond 3GHZ, but it's been working great for me so far, so why push my luck. I may try and get a bit more out of it soon.

The Noctua cooler is great - almost silent, and keeps things nice and cool.

And to add to the mix, I've just ordered a GSkill Falcon II 64gb SSD, which I'll use to put Windows 7 and my applications on (data stored on my WD Black 640GB). Should be awesome once it's up and running :)

I feel slightly ashamed of my lack of response to this thread. Only slightly as I leave the technical nerd section of the forum for trog to maintain, so I point the blame squarely at trog for this travesty. I will apologise on his behalf Jase, though I doubt he will feel any remorse....heartless bastard :P

It's all good guys. I take no offense that my post lay dormant for two years. I have also missed previous discussions on other topics - I generally hit the "view new posts" tab and that brings up all new stuff. But sometimes I must mistakenly click on stuff or refresh firefox and I miss stuff too.

I have in my hands my new SSD, so I must away to fire it up.

CC - the new SSD is very nice indeed. Click on something, and whammo, there it is straight away. Very noticeable improvement in responsiveness generally, but particularly when opening large programs or files. File transfers are also very quick. I've currently filled up about a third of the 64GB space on it with the OS and applications, and it flies along.

A very worthwhile improvement, but it's worth reading up on a few aspects, including partition alignment. When I first setup the disk, I cloned my current Windows 7 install and copied it onto the SSD. Too easy I thought. But when I found out about checking the alignment, it was out of whack. This causes significant speed reduction.

So I ended up doing a fresh re-install of Windows 7, and I'm slowly adding my programs as I need them. Haven't installed any games yet, so I can't comment on how the SSD goes with them.

It's completely silent too, which is nice. Although I still hear my other normal hard drives if they're accessing data.

I was tossing up between upgrading my CPU to a quad core, or buying an SSD. I think I definitely made the right choice, as the SSD benefits are noticeable in everything you do on the computer.

Yeah SSD's are pretty made. I was watching The Night Finger on his beast the other day, load speeeds for everything are off the hook as it were. Game load speeds seamed a lot faster too, though we didn't spend a lot of time testing it. I'll wait for the technology to improve (greater capacity and improved reliability/product life span) and invest a few my self ;-)

1x Asus Maximus 3 gene
1x i5-750
2x2gb corsair ddr3 dominator gt's red n black with heatsink n fan
i have a new 5770 that i will continue to use.

Something i perhaps wouldnt mind some suggestion on is crossfiring. There are 2 pciex16, single config runs at 16x while dual card config run at 8x.Most tests ive seen suffer a maximum loss of 5% running dual at 8x which ppl say is next to nothing. Is it worth while to save a few bob n get a newer 5850 or to just crossfire another 5770?

5770 = 200 max
5850 = 380-400

These SSD's are punching at unreal levels above plate drives. To think that you can upgrade one part for such a significant boost. You are clearly happy.

Really? Would the 5850 be better than the 2 x 5770? I've got no idea as have not even googled what the benches would be like as a comparison in this situation? All I can say so far my card has dealt with everything chucked at it so far, it is a 5850.

Good timing for the 5770 to be bought up actually...

Upgrading computer in the next couple of weeks (I know I say that every couple of months...worse than CC there I think) got case, psu and other things chosen, unsure about what graphics card to get.

I'm 95% certain I'll go for the 5770 which I can get for $190. Budget for the graphics card is $200. It's either this or a 4870. Thoughts?

I'm currently using a 8500gt, so anything has to be better than that....

Somehow I think I had cried wolf many more times than your good self?

I menioned a post or so back it would be a good idea to google comparisons for the cards?

If your looking at a monitor what sort, size, brands etc are you looking at?
