cold weather starting woes

Postby Dr.Angryhead on July 9th, 2010, 4:53 pm

Hye all.

Just lookin for advice as this turn in cold weather is makin it impossible to start my bike at 6:30am!

It will eventually start sometimes, but takes so bloody long it basically flattens my entire battery, and its a new battery too lol. Sometimes it will kick and run for a few seconds then die out again. Its such a shitfight that i just give up on riding it to work on winter mornings!

It is a carbie bike of course, 2007 with less then 20K on the clock. I have had the valve/cam gear clearances done so the top end is in order. The only other thing i can think of to assist in it spinning when its cold is to replace the sparkers and leads, which i may do anyway shortly. (oh yeah and its a hyosung but i don't want any helpfull advice like "buy a suzuki lol!")

Anyone else got any helpfull suggestions? i think the majority of the problem is i've only got a park in the backyard, no carport so the poor bloody thing gets all cold and rained on all teh time lol!

mmm sounds like a shit of a thing to start. I would deffinately be doing the plugs and leads when ya get the chance. Perhaps check to make sure it's choke is working properly and that there is no water in the fuel (this can get in there by either condensation or through a porely constructed airbox letting water in while riding). If it's been getting rained on, pull ya plug leads off and make sure they are really dry before trying to start it. Mightn't hurt to bung some WD40 on the tops of ya plugs too to keep the water off em a bit.

Failing all of this, buy one of these, but dont use it unless it really refuses to start first. It's not kind to cold engines especially all the time, but it does work and wont hurt if used sparingly and seldomly.

Hope this helps :)

?? At what sort of temperatures does it start getting hard to start? Has it always done this or is this something new that has just occured?
I'm assuming it has an auto choke? Is it a nat asp-Carby or EFI model? When it eventually start does the slightest touch on the throttle kill it regardless of the choke position?

Without a few details it is hard to pick one of many possible causes and we still maybe clutching at staws. My first port of call would be the Hyo forums and ask questions there as more people will share your problem?

i had the same prob....my bike is mechanically A-One.

like you i have to park outside in the open - so what i did, was get a thermal fleece blanket from kmart for 5 bucks, and put in on my bike (specifically over fuel tank and engine) and now starts fine..just needed something to take the edge off.
